Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe The coronavirus outbreak and resulting lockdown forced Barcomi's cafes in Berlin to redefine their job, leading them to build up a network with the aim of supplying hospitals with packed lunches.
"We had the idea, ok, we are going to do care packages for hospitals: how are we gonna do this? Because you cannot just call a hospital in Germany, in Berlin and say, you know, 'we are coming.' It doesn't work that way. So we had to like send out our feelers in our network. Doctors, helpers, nurses and we had to sort of weasel our way in that way," said cafe owner Cynthia Barcomi on Tuesday.
When closing due to coronavirus restrictions, Barcomi's cafe in Berlin's Mitte district had 16 cheesecakes that had to be thrown away and instead they decided to give it to a fire station. The warm reception of these cakes gave Cynthia Barcomi the idea of the care packages and motivated her to take on the challenge, as the "alternative was closing down everything."
"With the hospital packages, I mean, is certainly not a business model, but it is not about being a business model, it is about having a purpose, it is about other people feeling that they have a purpose and it is about also giving back and it has been really positive, really challenging, really amazing thing. I am very glad that we are doing it," Barcomi added.
People can make donations through the cafe's website to deliver cakes, sweets, and salty care packages with a personalised message to hospitals in Berlin, to which Barconi's adds brownies, cookies and other delicacies. The initiative has helped the cafe to stay open during the coronavirus crisis.
According to their website, Barcomi's is working with Benjamin Franklin University Hospital, St. Gertrauden Hospital, St. Marien Hospital, Vivantes Hospital at Urban, Waldfriede Hospital, DRK Clinic and Vivantes Wenckebach Clinic, all located in Germany's capital.
