Relaxing of social distancing restrictions 'to be looked at in a few weeks' time'

Relaxing of social distancing restrictions 'to be looked at in a few weeks' time' Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has called for Australians to “hold off a little bit longer” as “there will be announcements about relaxing some of these (social distancing) measures” in the coming weeks.

Professor Kelly said as it stands, “we’re not relaxing any of the measures, at the national level, that have been announced up to now for a period of four weeks”.

However, he said, “we’re waiting for that four weeks to happen before we change our advice, broadly, about social distancing and the other measures that have been put into place”.

Last week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison had discussed “the road out” of coronavirus in the nation saying there are “no plans” to change the current lockdown measures for that four week period.

Professor Kelly said, “people should make those decisions themselves” about whether to have personal interactions with aged family members.

He also said the populace should consider “digital connections (and) other connections” when interacting with the elderly as they “don’t entail very close contact”.

“Let’s see how we are in a couple of weeks' time, or three weeks' time, and then there will be announcements about relaxing some of these measures and our advice.
