Australia may have dodged the worst of the pandemic, but many people are not facing an epidemic of debt. The six-month eviction ban announced in march stopped the rental system crumbling. However at least 10 per cent of the eight million Australians who rent, and the landlords who rely on the payments, are struggling. Some rent reduction agreements are simply leading to a ballooning debt that may never be repaid.
