Live: Gavin Williamson to issue statement on schools reopening

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson will be in the Commons to tell MPs the government has failed in its bid to get all primary-age kids back in school before the summer holidays.

The Sun reports government sources confirming the pledge to give all primary-age kids a month back in school before the end of term will not be met.
A “senior government source” tells the Sun’s Kate Ferguson the department for education will have to “wind back a bit” on getting all under-11s back this month.

“Some schools don’t have enough space,” the source says. “We have always said we will listen to schools, so we are likely to step back a bit on that.”

Earlier, Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove will be in the Commons to answer an urgent question from his opposite number Rachel Reeves on the deadlocked post-Brexit trade talks.

The latest round of negotiations concluded last week and left both sides admitting there was little prospect of a breakthrough without political leaders intervening.

Boris Johnson is expected to fly to Brussels later this month for crisis talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
