Just after 1pm Sunday a column of black smoke began to rise from a house on 96th street in East Elmhurst, Queens. After multiple people called 911 Engine 316 arrived first on scene and transmitted the 10-75 (code for a working fire). Within seconds Ladder 154 arrived and with Engine 316 made a push into the building to extinguish the fire and search for victims. Almost immediately they radioed to the 49 Battalion that they had two people still trapped inside and that they were in the process of rescuing the victims. Both people were pulled out and handed over to EMS personnel. Unfortunately one man has succumbed to his injuries. The Fire Marshals have taken over the scene and will determine the cause.
